Canteen Duty & Project Management.
Last week, I did canteen duty at my daughter’s school. There’s nothing like watching a prep step up to the counter, clutching a few silver coins, with eyes locked on a dixie cup or frozen yoghurt. Most often, they’ve chosen something well beyond the total of their coin collection.
So, we work it out together.
Maybe they swap their order for two red licorice sticks and a zooper-dooper. Sometimes, we get creative—cutting a treat in half to share with a mate, or I propose coming back next time with just 20c more to get that elusive best treat. The goal is always the same: leave with something they’re happy about.
It reminded me of the early stages of building or renovating. Homeowners arrive with a vision—and a budget they hope will stretch. But unlike the canteen, where the limits are discovered immediately, building costs take time to uncover. By the time it becomes clear a dream isn’t affordable, they’ve already spent energy, time, and thousands of dollars on plans and approvals.
That’s the biggest difference. The kids can adjust in the moment. But homeowners often find out too late.
That’s why early project planning matters. When we test ideas, shape expectations, and get real before big steps are taken, we can still create something joyful and meaningful—without regret.
Because success isn’t getting everything. It’s walking away with something you love, and knowing it was the right call.
PS: If your clients are dreaming of a frozen yoghurt on a zooper-dooper budget, let’s chat. A quick ‘Cuppa with Katie’ might help align their vision with what’s actually possible.
